32 Black Professional Organizations and Associations

BOLD is a national leadership training program that aims to equip black leaders with the skills needed to place themselves at the forefront of movements for social justice. The NAACP is a long standing civil rights organization that works on a broad scale to achieve racial justice for citizens in urban communities. Located on 315 acres within the African Nova Scotian community in and around Dartmouth, Akoma, is a nonprofit with a mission to create economic and social opportunities for the community. Akoma provides affordable housing and economic prospects for this vulnerable and underserved community. Others such as Margaret Murray Washington, less vocal about laws like segregation, worked to improve the conditions of Black individuals in these spaces. For example, Washington and Southern women’s clubs helped improve the conditions of segregated public spaces.11 While Ruffin engaged in similar community work, she continued to speak outwardly and radically against laws about segregation.

The issues that affect our community will make or break how we continue to thrive in this country. Together, let's amplify the voice of Black America to make sure solutions to our most pressing issues are equitable. The Organization of Black Designers is the first national organization dedicated to addressing the unique needs of African-American design professionals. The National Association of Black Journalists was founded in 1975 and is an organization of journalists, students and media-related professionals that provides quality programs and services to and advocates on behalf of African-American journalists worldwide.

Take Action!

Common issues addressed include free speech, human rights, racial injustice, and criminal justice. The ACLU is composed of hundreds of attorneys and thousands of volunteers who are committed to protecting civil liberties in the country. Its mission is to secure the political, educational, social, and economic rights of Black people and to eliminate race-based discrimination. Black Girls CodeBlack Girls Code is on a mission to increase the number of black women working in computer programming. By hosting after school programs and workshops, the org plans to train one million young black women in the field by the year 2040.

Our democracy must meet these challenges by adopting reforms that promote safe and accessible elections. Floyd Jones, Givebutter's Director of Community and Partnerships, reflects on his experience as a Black man in nonprofit fundraising and why he’s excited to be partnering with Black Philanthropy Month. A volunteer-run restaurant in Brewton, Alabama, Drexel and Honeybees Donations-Only Restaurant provides delicious meals in a welcoming environment for everyone in their community, free of charge. This Black nonprofit, Life Renewed, focuses on offering support to those who have experienced abuse by intimate partners. Black Career NetworkNetwork for the Black community to find and post available jobs, as well as to attend career events. BYP studies the attitudes and cultural norms of black millennials in an effort to maximize their life experiences.

DuSable Museum of African American History

Through the creation of resources and initiatives, we support African-American Chambers of Commerce and business organizations in their work of developing and growing Black enterprises. The USBC is an association of more than 100 self-sustaining Black Chambers and small business associations nationwide and serves close to 250,000 small businesses. The mission of the National Society of Black Physicists is to promote the professional well-being of African American physicists and physics students within the international scientific community and within society at large. The organization seeks to develop and support efforts to increase opportunities for African Americans in physics and to increase their numbers and the visibility of their scientific work.

Despite ideological differences amongst leadership, Black clubwomen continued their critical work towards racial justice at the turn of the new century. In doing so, Black women across the nation shaped a new era – one with a diversity of possibilities. Preserving Black Churches is a project of the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund at the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Partnering with local organizations like the West Presbyterian Church, Vegans of LA is committed to offering healthy food choices to communities in need. Children of Promise, NYC (CPNYC) is the first and only after-school program and summer camp in New York City specifically designed to meet the unique BlackRadicalCongress.org needs and concerns of children with incarcerated parents. Since its founding, CPNYC has served over 1,500 children and their families, offering a safe space for them to receive emotional support, academic enrichment, and social development.
